Many people teach that when you accept Jesus that you automatically are filled with the Holy Spirit. We believe that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a subsequent act to salvation. It does not take anything away from the work Jesus did on the cross. It simply gives us the power to walk as Jesus walked.
Consider these scriptures:
- Acts 1:8 Jesus is speaking and says “But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you:…” Who was Jesus talking to here? The disciples that had already been born again. At this point and time, Jesus had already been raised from the dead and the new covenant had begun.
- Acts 19:2 The Apostle Paul (who wrote approximately 2/3 of the new testament) coming to Ephesus, came across some “disciples.” These people were already believers. He then states “”Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? Do you see it?
What about praying in other tongues?
The ability to speak with other tongues is evidence of having been baptized in the Holy Spirit.
Consider these scriptures:
- Acts 2:4 “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance”
- Acts 10:44-46 “…For they heard them speak with tongues and glorify God…”
- I Corinthians 14:39 tells us not to forbid others from speaking in tongues.
- Mark 16:17 This is a scripture familiar to many people as the great commission. Here Jesus tells us that “these signs shall follow them that believe…they shall speak with new tongues…”
How do you receive the Holy Spirit?
Just like anything you get from God. You ask in faith and believe you receive. Luke 11:11-13 tells us that we will not get a counterfeit and that God will not harm us with the Holy Spirit. There is nothing to fear.
In Acts 2:4, the Holy Spirit came to those who asked and believed for it to happen.
In Acts 10:44, people received the Holy Spirit by hearing the Word about the plan of salvation and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit preached.
What do you need to do to receive the Holy Spirit?
- First, you must accept Jesus. If you have not or don’t know about the plan of salvation, follow this link and accept Jesus Christ First.
- Believe the scriptures regarding the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
- Ask Jesus to Baptize you in the Holy Spirit.
- Receive by faith the Holy Spirit. Believe that you receive when you ask for it.
